US and EU versions of Pokemon HG and SS drop slot machine and adds minigame called Voltorb Flip

If you are living in Europe then you shouldn’t be unfamiliar with the lack of a slot machine in Pokemon since Nintendo removed them from Pokemon Platinum. This time around Nintendo of America is jumping on the boat as well, but they are giving North American and European players a new way to earn the prizes normally gained by gambling.

Voltorb Flip is described by Offical Nintendo Magazine as a “a cross between Picross and Minesweeper.” The game takes place on a 5×5 grid where players uncover the tiles to find either a Voltorb or a coin multiplier. The multiplier increases the amount of coins you win and collecting all of the multipliers on a stage advances you to the next level which is harder and has a higher reward. Uncovering a Voltorb though sends you back to the previous level and you lose all your coins from that round.

It isn’t all just luck though. On the edges of the playing filed there are number clues telling you how many Voltorbs are in each row and what the total number of the multipliers add up to in that row.

Why should you play this mini games though? Rewards of course! Using the coins you have collected you can buy a variety of TMs and items. There are also three Pokemon that will be available for purchase as well, but one of the Pokemon changes between Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

You can check out ONM’s full run down on the minigame here.

Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver will be launching in North America March 14th and March 26th in Europe.

  1. Well, I did like having the slot machines in Pokemon. But I see and understand why they we’re taken out. It’s beacause if we alow slot mini games in games like Pokemon, many kids (and teens, come on I know 18 year olds who still play Pokemon)could become gamblers when they get older.
