Spider-Man hasn’t been doing so hot in recent years. Most titles he was featured in received less then stellar reactions from critics. Activision will be taking another shot at the franchise though with the recently announced Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions that is set for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS this September.
Gameplay wise, most of what we see in the trailer is very similar to what we have seem in past Spider-Man games. But the interesting part of the trailer is not so much the gameplay, but the characters and environments in the trailer.
The fabric of reality has been torn in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Three alternate universes are clashing into Spider-Mans world. Players must transverse all of these worlds not only playing as the original Spider-Man but also playing as alternate versions of Spider-Man from each world.
As of right now only two of the four playable Spider-Men have been announced. The original Spider-Man, whose world and attire looks as you would expect, and Spider-Man Noir. Spider-Man Noir and his world are heavily influenced by 1930’s black and white cinema. The two other Spider-Men have yet to be announced.
Each character, while having similar web slinging powers, will play differently according to Activison. Spider-Man plays as you would expect spiderman to play, but Spider-Man Noir gameplay is more focused on stealth. It is unknown what gameplay types the other characters will be.
One gameplay detail that seems to be hinted at in the trailer is the possibility of a first person mode. Occasionally the trailer will shift to first person, but whether or not this was just for cinematic effect is unknown at the moment.
I’m not a huge comic book fan, but hopefully we can get something closer to the quality of Batman: Arkham Asylum rather then a game like Spider Man 3.
