Hardware development is almost always going in some form at big shot companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, but they rarely actually talk about hardware till closer to launch. Sony opened their mouth recently though and spewed out some details regarding the development of the hardware.
“Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public,” said Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida. “Some future platform-related activities.”
While obviously Sony didn’t say anything about the system itself, they did detail Kaz Hirahi’s new approach to creating a new platform. “When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, ‘get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development.”
Now, developers like Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital, Guerrilla Games, ant the Santa Monica Studio are all giving input to help ensure future hardware is more developer friendly.
“[Kaz Hirarhi] wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us.”
It will be interesting to see what Kaz Hirarhi can do for the PlayStation brand in terms of new hardware now that Ken Kutaragi is out of the helm. What ever changes are made, let’s hope they lead to more awesome games for awesome systems such as the PlayStation line.
