Next Blizzard MMO a New IP

World of Warcraft is the most successful massively multiplayer RPG ever, pretty much blowing every other MMO out of the water in terms of subscribers. But for their next MMO, Blizzard is leaving behind all of their franchise names for a new IP according to Activision’s Bobby Kotick.

Despite having no previous franchise ties, the title will receive an “enormous investment,” said Kotick. Kotick didn’t give any insight on how far along these projects are. So when we see them, at this point, is anyone’s guess.

  1. I’m not too surprised at this. Wasn’t it announced absolutely AGES ago that their new MMO would be a new series and not based on their existing franchises?

I just dislike Bobby Kotick’s involvement, but I dislike him based on principle 😛

  2. I don’t see how they can create a brand new MMO. To follow that seems impossible, without World of Warcraft there is no MMO. If they want to create another MMO as succesful as WoW they will have to shut the servers down day 1.

There has probably not been a single game in history that could replicate how WoW consumed an entire genre of games. If you don’t understand what I’m saying play WoW for a month or two and then switch to any other Pay to play MMO that is not brand new and see how barren those games are in comparison. And it’s sad, because there are many other fun MMOs out there that cannot afford the development cost of patching or developing new content for their games as much as Blizzard because the few who are subscribed to those games and support those companies never come back after the first month and always go back to WoW.

This also makes me nervous about the upcoming game “The Old Republic” it is the only game since the release of WoW that might have a strong enough fan base and content support to hold it up. I’m not saying it is a “WoW Killer” but hopefully it will have a nice large community to support it.
