Engadget claims that they have received a tip from a trusted source that Sony is in the late stages of developing a PlayStation Phone built off the Android 3.0 platform.
The source described the device as a cross between the PSP Go and the Samsung Captivate. The slide out keyboard is replaced with the PlayStation Portable’s D-pad and face buttons. The analog nub has been removed in favor of a “long touch pad” that will be used for analog controls.
Engadget also reports that the device will have a screen that is between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WGVA resolution or better. A 5 megapixel camera may be included, but the source said this detail is not final yet. The platform will use a 1GHZ Snapdragon CPU, and the visuals fall in line with other PlayStation Portable games.
The source describes the system as mostly black with silver highlites, while the control pad itself is white and silver.
As for games, Sony seems to be showing off the platform with old PSX games and a handful of new PSP games. The source says franchises like God of War, Modern Warfare, and Little Big Planet may also appear on the platform.
I’m not too entirely sure what to think of this. But it does make me wonder if this will actually be considered a new platform, or if it will just simply be a PSP Go and a phone shoved together.
If this is related to the PSP2 rumors we saw before E3, than it sounds like it will be a completely different platform. We will have to wait and see if Sony announces anything at Gamescom next week or at Tokyo Game Show.
