OILD – Snow World

Oh yeah, let’s keep on moving! OILD is all about giving, so today we’re going to look at a game that’s freely available online! Though you’ll have to find an English patch for it. This ice level is actually somewhat notorious on the internet, though not in a way you’d guess. It’s the Snow World, from Yume Nikki!

Yume Nikki (“Dream Diary”) is a rather creepy game. It’s made in RPG Maker, yet there aren’t any real RPG elements. All you do is explore. In this game, you explore the dreams of Madotsuki, a mysterious shut-in. The game has almost no text or explanation of what’s going on, and all the maps are huge, confusing, and abstract. The fanbase has a wide variety of interpretations and unofficial “canon” for the game, which is fitting because the scariest dreams are the ones where you can’t trust even weird crazylogic. The goal is to find 24 “effects,” which give Madotsuki special abilities when they are activated. These effects can change the way characters react to her, give her unique skills, or do nothing at all. Yeah, it’s a weird game.

Like most of the worlds in Yume Nikki, the Snow World is a sprawling map where you can wander endlessly with no sense of where you need to go. There’s snow everywhere, broken up by evergreen forests and some igloos.  It’s not completely deserted though. There’s a yuki-onna (a mythical “snow woman” found in Japanese folklore) who gives Madotsuki the “yuki-onna” effect, which gives her the ability to make it snow. In one igloo you can find a sleeping girl called Kamakurako, though she barely reacts to anything you do. However, the biggest surprise happens when you dive into a pool located in another igloo. There you’ll find the home of a girl named Poniko. Poniko doesn’t pay you any mind. However, if you turn off the lights in her room, there’s a chance of THIS HAPPENING. WHAT IN THE WORLD WHY IS THIS HAPPENING OH NO AAAHHHH!!

Today’s wallpaper! Visiting Kamakurako in the igloo. The full version can be found here, but only if Uboa hasn’t ripped reality asunder yet.

Yume Nikki doesn’t have much in the way of music, so instead today’s music is Penguin from Pop n’ Music! Yes I linked to my own video because apparently nobody else has ever uploaded the song to Youtube. OH WELL. And here’s Silent Hill, from Dance Dance Revolution! This song is the epitome of holiday cheese, and that’s why it needs to be here.

And speaking of Penguin, today’s remix is Holiday, by Posu Yan! This is actually a remix of Penguin, and he made it for the OILD 2009 soundtrack! It’s a bright, poppy mix and has some adorable lyrics. I love it to death and you will too, so be sure to snag it!

Also, A CHALLENGE: At some point this month, I’d love to see a video of some people caroling with some ice level tunes. Yeah, most of them don’t have words, but some of the remixes do! Holiday does! Here they are!:

I know holidays are here
I can see the joy on people’s faces
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can feel the warmth of their embraces

warm and toasty fires, vibrant candle lights
fill the air with comfort and relaxation
brightly lit up houses, trees covered in white
fill the sky with such majestic decoration

holidays are here
I can smell the smoky firewood
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can hear the laughter, everything’s good

fluffy little snowflakes, melting in my hands
makes me wanna go outside and play
cheery happy people, all across the land
makes me wanna dance and have a joyful holiday

I know holidays are here
I can see the joy on people’s faces
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can feel the warmth of their embraces

crackling fireplaces, cozy conversations
makes me feel the kindliness of the days
nice delightful dinners, family celebrations
makes me feel that I am loved in every way

holidays are here
I can smell the smoky firewood
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can hear the laughter, everything’s good

fluffy little snowflakes, falling everywhere
makes me wanna go outside and play
cheery happy people, smiling with no cares
really makes me wanna dance and have a happy holiday

Seriously, if someone makes a video of them and their friends singing some ice level tunes, I’ll definitely post it here. If you want to wait until it’s a little closer to the holidays or when it snows, that’s fine! I just think it’d be real fun and cute. YAY ICE LEVELS!

  1. Oh man, Yume Nikki. I am going to man up one day and actually play that, but that game creeps me out to no end.

But yay Penguin! The dude with the highest rated comment on that video is quite funny and sexy, I gotta say.
