What do Lord of the Rings and Brett Favre have in common?

Well it looks like EA is about to force them both into retirement.

Let’s be honest EA has a lot of online games and with a lot of online games comes a lot of servers.  It seems that EA has finally decided to shut down some of these servers so they can free up valuable time and money that the company believes could be spent keeping up and updating newer more popular online titles.  Although most people know EA for its popular sports franchises such as NFL Madden and NBA Live people forget that at one time they were the soul developer of the popular Lord of the Rings gaming franchise, a franchise which EA was forced to take off their online servers December 31st due to an expiring license.

“Our licensing deal with Middle Earth Enterprises has expired forcing us to shut down the online services for the Lord of the Rings games,” said an EA representative. “We hope you have enjoyed playing these games online and appreciate your patronage.”

EA also stated that the EA sports titles that are scheduled to be shutdown in February and March “represent roughly 1% of all peak online players across EA titles.”

“We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games are never easy,” said EA.

Below is a list of the games and their expected date to go offline.
