The Pokemon series was birthed on the handhelds, and on the handhelds it has stayed for the most part. Aside from a few attempts at the console market, most home console Pokemon titles have been spin offs or simply made to compliment the handheld titles. With Nintendo’s latest investor meeting revealing that a Pokemon title is on the way to Wii, can we expect a main series Pokemon title on Wii? If Black and White Director, Junichi Masuda, has any say in it, probably not.
In an interview with IGN, Masuda was asked about how he feels about a full fledged console title. He answered, “I think the Pokemon core series is always going to be with handheld hardware, in the future as well. I consider handheld hardware you can carry around with you as almost being equal to being with Pokemon, always. I think handheld really matches the idea of Pokemon that we have. Also, you can communicate and transfer data all the time, whenever you want with a handheld. That’s also a match with the Pokemon concept.”
When asked what kind of Pokemon title he thinks fits the Wii, he answered “Obviously the home console allows people to get together, for parties, and those sorts of things. Maybe in the future, if we can think of a way to do something cool with that, then that’s the sort of environment we can work in.” Sounds like the usual mini-game collection would fit the bill here.
While the age old term of ‘never say never’ applies here, but it doesn’t sound like Masuda is too willing. And given the franchise history, I wouldn’t be holding out for a traditional title on the consoles.
