Yes! It’s here! And it’s… smaller than ever!!! Wait, what?!

Yep, it’s OBLIGATORY ICE LEVEL DAY! It’s the time of year where we celebrate that time-honored video game tradition… THE ICE LEVEL! Running on ice makes you slide around, but rarely do you fall over. Penguins try to attack you with alarming regularity. And need I remind everyone of all the snowmen in fezzes? That’s why ice levels are awesome! And that’s why we’re here this month. As always, check out the OILD page for details! And don’t forget the OILD ’10 and OILD ’09 pages! They’re full of great stuff!

Now, considering the nature of this year’s celebration (you’ll see in a bit!) we may have a lot of newcomers here. So let me explain just what the heck’s going on!

See, every year here at TheSpeedGamers, we have a little event centered on ice levels. Technically it’s called “Obligatory Ice Level Day,” but really it’s more like “Obligatory Ice Level Month.” Every day I’ll be posting about a new level, complete with screenshots and write-ups! I’ll also link to great ice level songs, and some wonderful remixes of those songs! I even made a wallpaper for each level, as both a means to give cheer and as a thank-you to everyone who’s donated and helped TSG this year.

The goal of this event is to just make people happy. Pretty simple, huh? Just give us some of that good ol’ peace on earth and good will towards men, and you’ll do fine. Plus it’ll make you feel pretty good, right?

Now, does this mean you should only spread joy this month by talking about video games? Not at all! See, OILD is a joke holiday. It’s not meant to be taken seriously at all, so I’m not exactly going to begrudge you for daring to tell us about something nice you’ve done that isn’t video-game-related at all.

If you want to comment, feel free to do so! And don’t forget to check out the forums and post about some levels, or even about any cheer you’ve spread! Please don’t be shy if you’re new; TSG’s community is one of the friendliest on the internet, so you’ll be welcomed with open arms! If you want to help out, please spread the word about our Zelda Marathon on December 16-19. We’ll be playing ALL the Zelda games, and all the donations go directly to Rockin’ H Ranch, an organization that uses fundraisers to give money to three different charities. So you’ll be helping three groups at once! Please help us out by telling everyone about us! And hey, let us know if you do that; I love hearing about that stuff!

ALL THAT SAID, HERE’S SOMETHING I NEED TO MENTION: This year’s OILD will be noticeably smaller than the previous years’. I could lie to you all and say I did that on purpose as some bold new design choice, but I’ll come clean instead. This year had quite a few… surprises… that resulted in me having less time to finish things to my satisfaction. These surprises popped up right around the time I normally start working on this stuff, so it became rather difficult. However, I’m going to forge ahead anyway with no complaints.

This silly fake holiday originally started on my personal blog. I posted the screenshots as a joke, and then after a few days of that, I started posting little dinky wallpapers. It was all on a whim, so I was drawing them the day I posted them, and boy howdy did it show. This was long before TSG, so I didn’t even have a charity to answer to, so I just generically put Child’s Play on it. During that year, my town had one of the biggest blizzards in years, and it knocked the power out of most of the city. So that OILD was spent quickly scribbling wallpapers on a tablet PC and using my brother’s slower internet connection to upload them. BUT I DID IT.

My point is, nothing’s going to stop our fun, even if the event can’t be as big as I wanted this year! So what if I didn’t get all the things I wanted? This is about having fun and making other people happy! It’s not about having a lot of bells and whistles.

One thing I do regret is that I couldn’t afford to hire our wonderful remixers to make a soundtrack this year. This is probably the biggest worry I had about this event, because I love the music we’ve gotten in the previous years. But there’s still time! IF YOU WANT TO QUICKLY MAKE A REMIX FOR ME, PLEASE COMMENT HERE AND SEND IT TO JAZAABOO @ GMAIL . COM WITH INFO ABOUT THE TRACK, ITS SOURCE MATERIAL, AND HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CREDITED AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE FOR ME TO PLUG YOUR SITE OR PROJECTS. If you can get them to me within a week, I’ll make soundtrack cover art and put the whole thing on the OILD site. But it has to be soon! Part of the point of the soundtrack is to get attention for the marathon, so it’s vital that I get it soon.

Additionally, I want to apologize to anyone who suggested a level that doesn’t get featured this year. I just ran out of time. But let me assure you that I will include them next year, so I hope that makes up for it. Again, this year was nuts, so I’m going to take what I learned and apply it to next year. At the same time, let me thank everyone who’s helped out, suggested, or done anything for this great, silly holiday!

*PHEW* Well that was a mouthful, huh? That said, ENJOY THE SHOW!

  1. I almost forgot about obligatory ice level day/month. D: Only almost though. 😛

I can try and make some remixes for OILD, but due to my seemingly random work schedule I don’t know when I’ll have the time to make them. When I have a track finished, I will definitely email you though.

  2. I just noticed that you were looking for remixers when I noticed Wednesday’s OILD post. Hopefully it’s not too late, because I have a song I did a few months ago that I’d be happy to offer. I’ll go ahead and send that one, and I’ll try to do at least one more if I’m able to finish by the end of Thursday.
