OILD: The Crystal Caves

Hey there! You must be here because you love ice levels! And because you love The Speed Gamers! Did you know we’re having a Mario marathon on December 14th? We’re raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation! Tune in for some awesome games and sweet prizes, like handmade wooden item blocks and a Wii U Deluxe! Anyway, I figured we should start off this holiday right. If you’ve been watching TSG for the past 5 years, you might think you’re hardcore. You might think you know games. You might think you have what it takes to survive. But can you traverse invisible bridges? That’s right, the first ice level is the Crystal Caves, from Dark Souls!

Yep, the Crystal Caves! Hey, I’ve posted about ambiguously icy levels before, so I can do it again!

Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, a notoriously difficult game. In Dark Souls, you explore the world, and the world does not like you. You’re basically fighting for your life through dungeons full of murderous monsters and giant bosses. You can also switch between being human and undead, because killing a person only once wouldn’t be mean enough. See, it takes place in a world where humanity used Fire to free themselves from ancient rulers and usher in a golden age.  But a guy named Gwyn, being a huge jerk, took all the Fire for himself. The world gets so screwed up that even Gravelord Nito (basically the grim reaper) can’t properly harvest souls, so it’s up to an undead hero to save the world… or maybe rule it?? HMMMM!

The Crystal Caves are of course covered in crystal. It’s everywhere! Crystal stalagmites, crystal golems, crystal everything! How did it get all crystalline? Well, blame Seath the Scaleless, a dragon that went insane trying to research scales that granted immortality. Before you get to him, you’ll have to deal with all sorts of monsters. Plus there are quite a few invisible bridges to cross! How do you get across them? Well, you have to look at the falling snow. If it looks like it lands in mid-air, it’s sitting on an invisible bridge. Have fun with that!

And now for some art! In the past I did wallpapers, but this year I thought it would be fun to make cards!

Solaire says “hey! Tell people about the marathon and RAISE THE FUNDS!”

And now time for the music! Every year I post about ice level music, and this is no different! Seath the Scaleless has his own theme, and it’s pretty creepy! You can almost feel his RARARAR DRAGON ANGER upon you, can’t you? And just for fun, let’s add in Paradise ~ Deep Mountain from Touhou: Perfect Cherry Blossom!

And yeah! Some remixes! There aren’t a ton of Dark Souls remixes out there right now, so let’s mix it up a bit! Icy Peaks is by Justus Johnston, and it’s a beautiful violin mix of Paradise ~ Deep Mountain!

Oh hmm, you may be wondering about the OILD soundtrack? Like the ones from ’09 and ’10? Well maybe something will surprise you. It is the season after all!

Wait, what’s this?? Oh, you may have thought my write-up on Dark Souls wasn’t very thorough. Well that’s because we’ve got some awesome bonus content this time! Squint from the LP Archive is known for his Demon’s Souls LP, and he generously made a mini-LP of the Crystal Caves! Anything you’d want to know about the level is right here, people!

Remember, TSG’s Mario Marathon starts on December 14th! You might win a Wii U Deluxe if you donate! All the money goes straight to the Make A Wish Foundation, so tune in and help out a great cause! Spread the word and you might win some digital games!
