OILD: White Land

Hey again! It’s the second stage of Obligatory Ice Level Day, the day that celebrates… uh… ice levels! This is all leading up to the Mario marathon on December 14th! We’re raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation! Tune in for some awesome games and sweet prizes, like handmade wooden item blocks and a Wii U Deluxe! So do you like to go fast? As in, really fast? As in, so fast you explode upon contact with a wall? Yep, today’s ice level is White Land, from F-Zero!

For a white land, White Land’s white land doesn’t look like a very white land, does it? Oh well, whatever. It’s White Land!

F-Zero was an early game for the Super Nintendo. It was a racing game, but it was meant to be an EXTREEEEEEME racing game. As you can see in the screenshot there, you can get up to (and exceed) 400 kilometers per hour. Your crazy hovercars would blast through alien worlds, and often times you could go flying off the side of the track and crash into the land below. So it was a lot like podracing, only with more believable graphics. OOH ICE LEVEL DAY JUST DOLED OUT AN ICE BURN!!

White Land was the obligatory icy track in F-Zero. The lighter parts of the track were frozen, and as always, you have little friction and you go sliding all over the place. Which is a bit odd since you’re HOVERING but whatever. Two tracks are set in this world. White Land 1 is pretty simple, with a basic design. White Land 2, however, is rather twisty and has one huge jump that really baffled most players. The jump is gigantic and you have to hold down on the d-pad to tilt the car upwards in order to survive.

Okay, so! Music! White Land is of course the theme to the track! There’s a Brawl version of White Land as well! Oh and gee hmm, let’s just include a bunch of other random ice level songs for totally no reason! Penguin is from Pop n’ Music, Frost Man’s theme is from Mega Man 8, Ice Cap Zone is from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, A Wish is from Secret of Mana, and Route 216 is from Pokémon Diamond/Pearl!

Now you’re thinking “HEEEYYY WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?!?! THIS HAS NO THEME AT ALL! LIES! SCANDAL! BURN TSG DOWN!!!!” Yes, I know you’re thinking that, you crazy! Stop being so crazy! Because today I figured the bonus content can be a historic collection of remixes! That’s right, it’s the very first Obligatory Ice Level Day Soundtrack! When I first proposed the concept of OILD to Britt, he told me to go for it! I wasn’t sure if I would get another chance to promote this silly fake holiday, so I went all out and commissioned some ice level remixes just for the occasion! So here we have great tracks as:

  1. “Holiday” (“Penguin” from Pop n’ Music) by Posu Yan
  2. “Frost Bossa” (“Frost Man” from Mega Man 8 ) by Joshua Morse
  3. “Ice Cold Retro” (“Ice Cap Zone” from Sonic the Hedgehog 3) by Joshua Morse
  4. “A Wish” (from The Secret of Mana) by Select Start
  5. “Route 216” (from Pokémon Diamond/Pearl) by Select Start

Download it! It’s free, and it’s for all of you to enjoy!

Remember, TSG’s Mario Marathon starts on December 14th! You might win a Wii U Deluxe if you donate! All the money goes straight to the Make A Wish Foundation, so tune in and help out a great cause! Spread the word and you might win some digital games!
