Modern Warfare 3 vs. Battlefield 3 – Part One

It’s a double review this week from me, as I take a look at the two shooting heavyweights – Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3. I’ll be looking at both the single and multiplayer and seeing just how well they stand up, but first – the Campaign gets my attention before I go for the multiplayer. Let’s dive in.

“60 FPS Gives Modern Warfare 3 Competitive Edge,” Claims Sledgehammer

Now, if I were to ask what you look for in a game, I’d highly doubt, or would hope not, that any of you say that it would be 60 FPS. Apparently Glen Schofield, General Manager for Sledgehammer Games thinks it is.

For those of you unaware, Sledgehammer are assisting Infinity Ward with the latest in the Call of Duty series. Schofield, in an interview with AusGamers, hyped up the graphics side, naming anonymous competition – Battlefield 3 jumps to mind instantly – that they will be the only shooter released in that period to be capable of this, and confidently stated that he was “not sure any of our competitors will”

Johan Andersson of DICE made a good counter-point on Twitter, stating that:

“We think huge levels, lots of players, great effects, destruction, vehicles & varied gameplay are more important than 1080p, how is that a shame? Name a single FPS game that runs at 1080p on any of the consoles? We would have to do huge gameplay cuts.”

As it stands, I’m looking forward to both games, but the rivalry is huge now – will make the situation even more interesting when the reviews flood in for both titles.

Forum taken down by DMCA Complaint – UPDATE

Earlier today our forums were taken offline by Dreamhost because someone filed a DMCA complaint. The person filing the complaint claimed he owned the rights to a specific piece of content posted in our forums by a member of the community. The content is question was a list of leaked perks for the upcoming game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

At this time we do not believe the individual who filed the complain is part of Activision, nor do we think he owns the rights to the information. We plan to file a DMCA counter-notification against the party. We could easily remove the content and therefore enable the forums faster, however, since we are not infringing on any rights, we want to take a stand against these sorts of actions.

With that said the forum will remain down while we sort this out. The blog will continue posting news and original content as usual, but you will not be able to post comments on the articles until we resolve this matter.

Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience the downtime may have caused.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Reveal Trailer

After a semi-boring teaser trailer, we actually get a full reveal trailer! As you can see, it is indeed Call of Duty. It is also indeed modern and warfare for the third time. After the jump you can see the trailer. As we heard with the previous leak, much of it takes place in cities around the world within the United States and Europe. But otherwise, it looks like Call of Duty.

The trend for the last couple of years is to have an actual full gameplay video at E3, generally during Microsoft’s conference. So unless Activision is pulling out something early, we should be seeing more then.

Rumor: Modern Warfare 3 Reveal Next Month

A Call of Duty game this year? Unbelievable! But PlayStation Magazine’s teaser makes it seem likely that we’re about to get the third entry in the Modern Warfare series.  As you can see, the magazine shows a massive “3” in Modern Warfare font, with the text below saying “The biggest game in the world returns.”

After Modern Warfare 2, many developers left Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward, founding Respawn Studios. Actvision has since filled out the team again, although whether or not this title is from them or Sledge Hammer Games is unknown.

Sledgehammer and Raven Software Both Set to Co-Develop Modern Warfare 3

Sledgehammer has now been confirmed to be working alongside Infinity Ward in the development of Modern Warfare 3, the latest entry in the popular Call of Duty series. Honestly, this isn’t much of a surprise at all, seeing as how job listings for Sledgehammer openly announced that the company would be working on the next CoD game.

Apparently, the two companies are “equally sharing” development for the Campaign feature, while another company, namely Raven Software, will be developing the multiplayer aspect.

Infinity Ward has gone through a lot of turmoil lately since Activision fired Jason West and Vince Zampella, the head guys over at Infinity Ward, so it was pretty apparent that Infinity Ward wasn’t going to be able to handle this task alone. Sledgehammer was working on a Call of Duty spinoff before the upheaval at Infinity Ward, but have now put that project on hold to focus on Modern Warfare 3.

As is the norm for CoD, the game is expected for release in November 2011. It just goes to show how massive CoD has really become, seeing as there are 4 different companies working on it at once (including Treyarch, who recently developed Black Ops).
