As Fumito Ueda prepares for the release of The Last Guardian, the spiritual sequel to his previous games, his company plans to re release his previous two games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus in a HD format. In order to generate interest for the release, two trailers were released, one for each game, promoting interest in the re release which is due late September. The new releases will feature trophy and 3D support, a feature not found in the PS2 version. While the games were intended to be sold separately, the games will also be available in a collectors bundle which contains the games, a 100 page booklet detailing how the games were made and exclusive themes that come with both games. The trailers can be viewed after the jump and while the double pack is set for a late September release, The Last Guardian is due to come out during Spring 2012.
While a Team ICO PS3 rerelease has been in the works for some time now, Sony Santa Monica’s director of Technology Tim Ross confirmed today that Bluepoint would be working on the rerelease (Bluepoint worked on the God of War 1&2 rerelease). The framerate of the release is a point that is causing confusion. A representative from Sony said that the game will feature stereoscopic 3D and wil run at 60 frames per second. This causes a contradiction with what was reported on the US Playstation blog that the same will run at 30FPS (Maybe 60FPS is the total of the two images required for the 3D?). The double pack will be released next year where we can all find out about these differences for ourselves.
Through a Famitsu leak the pack has essentially been confirmed. The beloved PS2 games have been something people have wanted in HD for quite some time. In Japan the games are going to be released separately, however I can not see that happening in a America. Even the box art for the Western release was leaked. You can take a look at it after the jump.
An HD remake for Shadow of the Colossus and ICO seems almost garunteed at this point. Signs have been popping up all over, and now a retail listing for the title has appeared at Walmart.com.
The title is listed for $39.82, around the same price as the God of War Collection HD remake on PS3. The title is even available for preorder, although the listed 4/1/11 date is most likely a place holder.
If we were to hear about it any time soon, Tokyo Game Show would probably be the place to show it. I’ve never particularly liked ICO, but a HD rerelease of Shadow of the Colossus may be worth the forty dollar price point alone.
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are easily some of the best titles in PlayStation 2’s library and with the third entry in the series on the horizon it looks like it will be time for ICO and Shadow of the Colossus fans to play through these titles again to hold them over til The Last Guardian’s release.
Game designer for team ICO Fumito Ueda was asked in a interview with 1UP about a Shadow of the Colossus and ICO remastering similar to that of the God of War Collection. He responded “Initially, I didn’t want to consider that, I always thought they were designed for PS2 and should stay there. But lately, I’ve been thinking it would be nice to provide the games to other platforms to reach more users.”
While the original two games are visually impressive for PlayStation 2, a little PS3 make over could definitely do them some good. The Last Guardian is currently set for 2010 and is exclusively for PlayStation 3.
