It feels like this console cycle could go on forever, but all things must come to an end. But when our consoles be pushed out the window? Square-Enix thinks fairly soon, as they are planning on a new Canadian studio that will staff at least one hundred people. Why the sudden opening of a new team? Eidos’ Stephane d’Astrous has the answer.
“The new consoles from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will require more attention and more staff. We want to prepare ourselves.” This new studio is currently just in the planning phases, but Square-Enix hopes to have it up and running by next year.
With E3 on the horizon, we have to start asking if any of the big three will, at least, tease their new consoles. My guess is that we’ll have to wait until 2012 to hear anything, as Nintendo and Sony are focused on the handheld market. And hopefully in Microsoft’s case, they’ll have some software for the Xbox 360, which has been lacking outside of multiplatform releases so far this year.
