TSG Q&A: “Can I be a member?”

I wanted to start this up as a way to publicly answer some of the most common questions we get. Yes, there are a lot of them.

Anyway, at least a few times a month we receive emails asking if they can become a speedgamer, and they list various reason why.

Here’s the answer: Generally speaking, we’re all speedgamers: The fans, the forum members, and anyone who just plain likes us and what we do. I know that’s not what the question is asking though, you want to know if you can participate in a marathon. Well the answer is yes and no. First we have to know that you are trustworthy and reliable. The best way to do this is to become an active member in our community. Second, you have to realize that we have a lot of staff members, including forums moderators and chat ops, that we contact first whenever we need help filling a position. They have already proven themselves trustworthy and reliable.

Now I don’t want to discourage anyone, but the likely best case scenario time frame for you to actually get a chance to participate in marathon is a minimum of 1 year. Do NOT count on that though. If you are willing to buckle down and commit, then more power to you. We would be happy to have you join our community, and if we need you, we will contact you.

If you have any questions or comments about this response, let me know in the comments section below.

  1. I have a couple of questions:

First, Let me get this straight (not saying it’s bad or good, just facts,) the admins and staff get first priority when it comes to games. Then it goes down to the chat ops and moderators. If they don’t want to play, then it is up for the trusted members. Did I get this all correct?

Secondly, I think that there are enough staff and chat ops right now, but are you expecting to be adding any time soon? If so, will the process be the same as the writer position or the chat op? Write what you have done on the forums, how you contribute to the forums, etc… or is it we chose you if you deserve it?

    1. 1. Yes, that is correct.

      2. We also think we have enough chat ops right now, but people come and go often so positions open up randomly. When a position does open up though, the staff usually deliberates and chooses based on the results. We do this because an application will not show us what we need to know. Whereas for the writer position, an application will show us how capable you are at writing.

  2. Quite honestly, that’s a good selection method. I’m in here everytime I can get online, though I’ve found it a little hard to jump into conversations. Still, it’s always fun coming in and meeting people, and the marathons are tons of fun.

    1. Well that line is usually given out because it’s the condensed version, albeit vague. Honestly we are asked this question so frequently that it’s just second nature now to give out that version. Hopefully now this post will help some newcomers.

  3. I helped in two marathons. Helped Baltes with Resident Evil 5 and Castlevania HD. In the Castlevania marathon we did dual screen for HD. Both teams completed HD without any game overs! You don’t need to play the games to help in the marathons. You can advertise. It’s one of the best ways to contribute. Just make sure to be polite and not spam.

  4. There are a lot of meme-jokes to be had out of this post.

“Join TSG community one day, make one post and never come back.

    Call self a Speed Gamer.”

Nah… I’m sure this will make it more clear for the newer members… assuming they read it.
