Decision on ads

It has been decided to try and monetize the site. It’s been something we’ve often discussed, but always decided against because we thought that it might alienate our supporters, plus we didn’t want to seem trashy. That’s still our concern, but that reality is that we’re not receiving enough revenue from the ads or the store to keep up with maintaining the site.

We know most of you use ad blocking software, and we do wish that you guys would disable such software to help us out. The current ads on the blog are per click, excluding Fangamer which is per sale. Soon we will try to get per impression ads, which would lead to more revenue.

Now the revenue we do make will always go directly back into supporting TSG. First it will be used to pay site costs, or upgrades (aka new forum software). 😉 Second is prizes for contest, giveaways, or other events plus shipping costs for prizes. Running TSG is pretty costly, and often times we have to dig into our own personal funds to support TSG and keep it running, which is obviously unsustainable.

I want to thank you for your continued patience and support.

You are welcome to leave your comments on this post, but remember be respectful.

  1. I think it’s a good idea, as long as you don’t start banning people who use ad blockers like some sites do.

Have you looked into Project Wonderful? They’re auction-style placements with daily rates.

  2. This is something we feel like we had to do. I was paying for the website out of pocket along with the server space and other expenses like mailing prizes. I spent well over $100 just mailing off prizes for the last marathon and if I was going to be still living at home I would be fine with that. That’s not the case anymore. As most of you know I get married next weekend and $100 (on average) a month worth of TSG fees is something I can’t do anymore. I want TSG to continue to have a website and forum and this one small sacrifice we had to make. I understand the negativity toward ads and we won’t do anything to jeopardize you or your computers safety. However, if anyone has a better suggestion, we are all ears.

  3. Thank you. I was wondering why you haven’t done this yet, ads don’t annoy me at all. In fact, I will actual click on them from time and time just to help you guys out, because I love TSG soooo much, I want to see you flourish. Keep on thriving TSG.

  4. I think everyone on the internet has gotten used to ads on web pages, so it’s not really a big deal. I think video ads are what makes people mad now. I don’t mind ads as long as it helps you guys. 😀
