OILD – Crystal World

Man, the third day of OILD and already we’ve done quite a bit! Notm put up an OILD 2011 page, we may get some remixes yet, and we made some new friends in the crew of Fantasy Kingdoms! So, what do you plan on doing to help promote? Let us know! Today’s level is one of the few featured levels from an arcade game. But man is it ever a fun one! It’s Crystal World, from Gradius 2!

CRYSTAL WORLD! Some people say these are supposed to be literal crystals and not ice. However, much like Hollow Bastion last year, I’m going to maintain that this all in fact ice and whoever says I’m wrong will get a cinderblock to the forehead. Uhh… yes, so anyway!

The Gradius games are pretty straightforward. In it you use a spaceship called the Vic Viper, and you just fly around each level shooting down enemies and objects. Seem kinds of standard, right? But the level design makes it a pretty fun ride. The powerups you get are even more fun! You can speed up, get different weapons, or even get OPTIONS. Options are little orbs that follow you around and shoot at things when you do. I’m sorry, I just think Options are adorable because they’re circles. And circles rule because–oh, wait, aren’t we supposed to talk about ice levels or something?

Okay, so the Crystal World is the third stage in the game. It starts off much like my typical Tuesday mornings; with lots of little robots and cannons firing lasers at you. However, this quickly gives way to huge ice structures that try to block your path. The Vic Viper is notoriously fragile, and even one hit will cause the entire ship to disintegrate. What I’m trying to say is “try to not smash your face into the giant blocks of ice, if you can keep from it.” Before long, the games introduces bouncing ice blocks as well. Fortunately you can shoot these into smaller pieces, which are easier to fly around. And after that it devolves into laser cannons shooting at you from tons of flying ice blocks, also known as “my typical Thursday mornings.” At the end of the stage you run into the Crystal Core. This thing has gigantic metallic tentacles and can’t be destroyed until you shoot out the little barriers that guard its weak point. So what are you waiting for? BEAT THAT CORE ALREADY!

PEWPEWPEW! GET ‘IM, VIC VIPER! The full wallpaper is right here, folks!

Aw c’mon now, don’t act like we don’t have music for you! Right here’s Crystal World, which as you can imagine is the theme to Gradius 2’s Crystal World. And we also have Penguin, from Pop n’ Music! Because it’s getting awfully Konami in here. AS WELL IT SHOULD. Finally someone’s uploaded the full version of Penguin to Youtube! It’s so adorable. And hey, I even uploaded an HD version of that ancient Penguin cartoon I made a bazillion years ago. IT’S GOT DOT EYES! AND SQUISHINESS!

And now here’s the part you old-timers are probably expecting, but hey, I got to plug this every year. It’s Holiday, Posu Yan’s excellent Penguin remix for the OILD ’09 soundtrack! Just go to the page and download the whole soundtrack to get this great song.

Just like every year, I also feel a need to post the lyrics:

I know holidays are here
I can see the joy on people’s faces
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can feel the warmth of their embraces

warm and toasty fires, vibrant candle lights
fill the air with comfort and relaxation
brightly lit up houses, trees covered in white
fill the sky with such majestic decoration

holidays are here
I can smell the smoky firewood
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can hear the laughter, everything’s good

fluffy little snowflakes, melting in my hands
makes me wanna go outside and play
cheery happy people, all across the land
makes me wanna dance and have a joyful holiday

I know holidays are here
I can see the joy on people’s faces
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can feel the warmth of their embraces

crackling fireplaces, cozy conversations
makes me feel the kindliness of the days
nice delightful dinners, family celebrations
makes me feel that I am loved in every way

holidays are here
I can smell the smoky firewood
it’s the most wonderful time of the year
I can hear the laughter, everything’s good

fluffy little snowflakes, falling everywhere
makes me wanna go outside and play
cheery happy people, smiling with no cares
really makes me wanna dance and have a happy holiday

I’ve still been waiting for some brave souls to make a video of them caroling with this song. Will it happen this year? I hope so!

  1. I love OILD! I look forward to this every year actually. Thanks for all the great stuff, Ana. I’m excited to hear more about these prospective remixes you mentioned, as one of my most common playlists in the winter is the OILD soundtrack.
