OILD: The Zoo

Day 8 of Obligatory Ice Level Day! This is a goofy, fake holiday meant to build hype for The Speed Gamers’ Zelda marathon, which starts December 12th! We’re raising money for Mercy Corps, so I hope you all help us out by promoting and donating! Man, our Halloween marathon sure was great, wasn’t it? Of course it was! We played a ton of spooky games and raised a lot of money! And some of that money came from the Sweet Home vs. Parasite Eve donation war. I’m never one to back down from some self-congratulatory nonsense, so today’s ice level is The Zoo, from Parasite Eve!

Parasite Eeeeeeeve! I dunno if anyone noticed, but I totally love this game. Set in New York in the 90s, Parasite Eve is a horror story of insane evolution and twisted monsters. A set of mitochondria has evolved to the point of sentience, and it manifests itself as an entity known only as “Eve”. Eve has but one goal; to warp and control living things so that their mitochondria can essentially become the dominant life force on the planet. Well okay, two goals, because she also wants to give birth to an “Ultimate Being” and boy, is that being ever ugly. As Eve gains control of animals, she turns them into horrible, murderous freaks. The only person unaffected by Eve’s control is Aya Brea, a cop that ends up developing superpowers. Because that’s how Squaresoft rolls.

The zoo is located in Central Park, but it’s not until the second day of Eve’s reign of terror that you even see it. And coincidentally, that day is also Christmas day! Hope you like hideous monsters, because that’s your present! Aya learned that Eve was to give a concert in the park, and that she was using her power to lure people to the concert hall. Her partner’s son went missing, so Aya takes it upon herself to find him. However, all of the animals escaped and became mutated, so needless to say that had to be taken care of. With bullets. Among the mutated animals are faceless cobras, apes with huge claw-like arms, and polar bears with distorted faces, a multitude of claws, and electrical powers.  Because again, that’s how Squaresoft rolls.

Yes, that’s a bear.

Want more Squaresoft ice tunes? Of course you do! A Wish and Eight Ringing Bells are both from Secret of Mana, and they’re some of the sweetest ice level songs out there! Chocobo’s Happy Christmas is from the Chocobo’s Dungeon OST too!

And a remix? Well, it’s not an ice level, but Square did do holiday remixes of some of their most famous songs, and this is a remix of Wind Scene, from Chrono Trigger! I don’t know, I just thought that was a cute idea so I had to share!

Less than a week to go! Man, I bet there’ll be all sorts of surprises at the marathon! I can’t wait.
