3DS Health Concerns, Region-Locking, and Luigi’s Mansion 3DS Possibilities

As you all know, Nintendo 3DS was reveled during E3. While Nintendo covered most of the big stuff during their keynote, they continued to talk about the platform over the next few days. While a variety of rumors and reports are swaying around, Nintendo did officially come out and talk about a few things.

First up, Kotaku got up with Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-aime.  He mainly addressed the health concerns around 3D effects that the 3DS has. Reggie said that they are “working with the experts in the field,” and that they have done “extensive testing.

Reggie does acknowledge that kids age 7 and under should probably avoid the features though. “We will recommend that very young children not look at 3D images. That’s because, [in] young children, the muscles for the eyes are not fully formed… This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol. We have the same type of messaging for the Virtual Boy, as an example.

Aside from the health issues, Reggie talked on a few other random details. They plan on including an extendable stylus with the Nintendo 3DS, and currently they are unsure if they will be enforcing region locking for the system.

But hardware talk is quite boring.  Let’s talk software. The Nintendo 3DS seems to be the place of reviving old games and franchises as many titles shown remakes, and of course Kid Icarus finally sparked back up.  But another Nintendo title may be returning to the platform.

According to IGN, Hideki Konno, producer for  the Nintendo 3DS and previously the lead designer of Luigi’s Mansion, said he would like to see Luigi’s Mansion show up in some form on the platform. Konno said that they tested 3D during the development of the original Gamecube title.

He talked in detail of exactly why he would like to see it on the platform. “The lighting of the game, and the dollhouse-like environment of the game I think would be very suitable for 3D. I think the depth and the width of the environments, like a box, that we had in Luigi’s Mansion would be a very good match for the effects of the 3DS.

I know this post is getting a little lengthy, but one more thing to point out is that at the show floor Nintendo had 2 more colors of Nintendo 3DS. Before we only saw red, blue and black. The colors after the jump are purple and orange. But keep in mind, these are not confirmed colors for launch.
